Match reports - Round 14

A Grade report

Playing Westminster is always a huge game for us, especially when we are playing them at their school ground. We've had alot of success playing at the school so we should take in superior confidence. Losing Ian Perrie was a huge loss for us but gaining Jason Robertson back for the midfield was also a huge lift.

We ran Pooraka pretty much all day last week to only go down by a couple of goals so we took a lot from that effort. This was a game that we really needed as finals are starting to slip away from us. We shouldn't need anymore motivation than this to give it our all.

The first half was a real battle with both sides putting their bodies on the line and running the ball well. At the main break it was only 3 points.

The third quarter they played some really good footy, but we had the emotion and endeavour to stay with them as they had the advantage of the breeze. At the last break it was only 10 points.

WE WERE RIGHT IN THIS CONTEST....

All we had to do was continue on with our pressure and run and deliver the ball well and we could've come home with the win. I guess that was just too hard to do....

We were completely outclassed in the last quarter. The game was there to win but we didn't want to win it. Questions were asked of the players before the game as I'm not convinced they are serious about their football this year. It seems CONTENT has crept its way into the group, thinking that winning the premiership last year is enough.

NEWS FLASH BOYS...

It's not enough. If what I said to you before the game was said to me I'd be disgusted at my coach but you need to know what I'm thinking and feeling. Maybe it wasn't understood as not many players actually showed that it hurt. At least the captain showed you how to go about it. Josh O'Connell's game across half back was outstanding, continually defending hard and if it wasn't for him we would've gone down by more. Nathan Leak across half forward continually gave us a target and won his position. Some other players had influences on the contest but it was those 2 players that stood out.

I apologise to our supporters that came out and watched as we went to water when we needed to show some heart. I'm getting sick of bashing my head against the wall as what I say for some reason doesn't sink in. All I ask for is players that want to listen and then show some actions on the field when needed. It seems the majority of the side that I continually back in are not giving enough so all I can do is reward other players that will do as I ask.

Best Players: Josh O'Connell, Nathan Leak, Chris Barrie, Ben Satterley, Will Darley

Reserves report

Firstly I would like to congratulate and thank the Westminster Football Club for making our boys welcomed and treated in a very professional manner. It sure is a pleasure to enter into contests against clubs such as Westminster - clash on-field, civilised comradeship off-field. Good job WOSFC.

On the issue of contests - once again we contested the game for 3 quarters (not four). At half time we were right in the game. All we needed to do was maintain intensity in the vital third term when Westminster had the use of a serviceable wind. Unfortunately my over exuberant positive pump at the half time break must have been (somehow) interpreted by the boys as having done enough and good for us – time to sit back. I am completely at a loss as to why or how that happened.

Here’s a simple game summary - 1st quarter against the wind – very competitive despite a slight deficit; 2nd quarter with the wind – we won the contests and out scored the opposition; 3rd quarter against the wind - after giving the boys a major positive pump and specific instructions – unforgivably we rolled over to the opposition’s grit and desperation; 4th quarter after a wake up call – won the contests convincingly kicking 3 goals and keeping the opposition scoreless.

Best players –
Paul Tripodi played an outstanding game. This was by far Paul’s best game for the club and thoroughly deserves his BOG votes. He didn’t give up. He didn’t let others do the job. He didn’t let the team down.
Andy Simpson played a good game in the middle and provided us with much needed penetration into attack.
Ryan Thompson played another great game – he’s young, fast, bullet proof. Bring on youth with a devil may care attitude. Every week Heath Doolette-Cox keeps demonstrating to all around him how fierce and competitive football should be played. Everything he does makes the coaching staff pleased. Finally, and after an indifferent few games, Andrew Maitland played a good solid game returning to something like he is capable of. Andrew has a lot of potential.
